Intaglio Progress

After harvesting a nice mess of snap beans, squash, and turnip greens from the garden, I got back to work on the intaglio brooch.  Here is an image of what I did yesterday:

I have completed the outer round of tatting this morning and am comtemplating what to do next.  Shall I add a round with Swarovski crystal accents?  More pearls?  Plain tatting?  Tatting with graduated picots?  Hmmm...

It is almost lunchtime, so after grabbing a bite, I'll get back to "dressing" my little intaglio lady.  She still needs a name and I've not come up with one that suits her yet.

REMMBER: THE PINEY WOODS SUMMER VACATION EVENT WINNER WILL BE ANNOUNCED ON THURSDAY, JUNE 7TH!!!  BE SURE TO LEAVE A COMMENT ON THE SUMMER VACATION EVENT POST FOR YOUR CHANCE TO WIN!

Jocelin has our sanwiches ready, so until tomorrow~
Happy Tatting!

A New Lady & Pearls

I happened up on a nice little intaglio brooch last week and finally got around to taking an image of her:

What shall I call this new lady?  While she is not a shell cameo, she has her own unique charm.  I am currently busy dressing her up.  She has received a bezel of champagne pearls and is in the early tatting stage.

Speaking of pearls:

Here are the champagne pearls.
And imaged below are the silver peacock pearls.

They are more of a lavender color than silver.

If any of you have a good name suggestion for my new lady, let me know.

THE WINNER OF THE PINEY WOODS SUMMER VACATION EVENT WILL BE ANNOUNCED ON THURSDAY, JUNE 7TH!!!
If you've not entered, click over to the Summer Vacation Event blogpost and leave a comment on how you'd use the goodies.  Good luck!

Well, the intaglio brooch is patiently waiting for me to finish round one of the foundation tatting, so I'd better hop to it.  Have a great day & until tomorrow~
Happy Tatting!

Jeep Driving

I don't have much in the way of tatting to share with you today.  Jocelin and I played in the Jeep most of the day and just had some wonderful mama/daughter time.

The ladies are still being "dressed" and will be ready for their debut soon, so stay tuned for the upcoming "Cameo Cotillion"!

DON'T FORGET:  the Piney Woods Summer Vacation Event winner will be announced on the blog on Thursday, June 7th!  To enter, leave a comment on the Summer Vacation blog post from last week and let me know how you'd use the goodies.  Good luck!!!

Guess I'd better go wash the mud off the Jeep before I get back to tatting.  Have a great day & until tomorrow~
Happy Tatting!

Happy Memorial Day!

Good morning, dear readers!  To all of you here in the USA,
Happy Memorial Day!!!

For those of you who do not know what a special day it is, this is the day we take to remember all of those who have died for our freedom.  It is a time of rememberance and a time for family.  Many will be celebrating with picnics, cooking out, or going to special memorial events.

We will be cooking out, spending time together and remembering those family members who have served our country and are no longer with us.

Jim will be grilling chicken breasts, steaks, and pork chops and I will be making the following dishes:

Fresh snap beans from our garden, seasonsed with onion, cilantro, oregano, homemade bacon bits and cut-up turnip greens.  I harvested the snap beans, onion, and turnip greens from our garden very early this morning.  The beans were snapped, onion and greens cut up, and all were added to a single bowl.  I then went to the herb garden and snipped some cilantro and oregano.  They were then cut up and mixed along with the bacon bits I make myself and keep in the fridge.  Water will later be added & I'll slow cook the mix on the stove for about an hour.

The other special dish I'm preparing is my own version of Southern fried squash.  I harvested 5 small crookneck squash from the garden, thin sliced them, then added oinions, cilantro, oregano and a small hint of mint.  The squash will then be dipped in a mixture of cornmeal and bisquik.  It will then be fried in a shallow fry pan of extra virgin olive oil.  When the squash is a light golden color, it's done.  Then it will be very well drained and blotted with paper towels.

Of course, I'll make a huge pan of cornbread, too.  The blueberries are ripening and I hope to have enough to bake a cobbler later.

Well, I had better get busy.  As you can tell, I've a lot of cooking to do!
May you have a wonderful Memorial Day!
Until tomorrow~
Happy Tatting!

Meet Adalaide

Good morning, dear readers!  I have had several emails inquiring about what I do to the cameos.  I had planned to wait until I had all of the ladies "dressed" and ready for their debut, but I will give you a peek at one of them.  Keep in mind that she is not fully dressed yet, but at least she is somewhat decent-

This is "Adalaide".
She began as a small carved shell cameo in a nice 12K rolled gold filled filigree brooch mounting.  She has been dressed up with a bezel of cultured rice pearls along with picot accents of 3mm Swarovski crystal AB bicones, a few more rice pearls and just a bit of tatting featuring Valdani Luxury Pearl Silk in S49.  More tatting will be added to finish her ensemble.

I have worn embellished antique cameos for years and have been asked to make a few available for clients.  Each piece is carefully selected and lovingly enhanced.  No two pieces are ever the same.

Vintage and antique jewelry has been a passion ever since I was employed MANY years ago by a local jeweler.  I did not realize at the time how that one job experience would influence my creative career.  Being exposed at such a youg age to gorgeous estate jewelry pieces was such a blessing.  I learned much during the 2+ years I worked there, but have educated myself further over the years.

Don't forget to comment on yesterday's post for your chance to win the Piney Woods Summer Vacation Giveaway Event!!!  The winner will be announced on June 7th, so be sure to let me know how you'd use the goodies.

Well, I had better run.  I'm fixing a special lunch for my husband's office today and need to frost the butter pecan cake.  May you have a fantastic holiday weekend and until next week~
Happy Tatting!

Parrish Pendant

The remainder of the ball of Valdani size 8 pearl cotton in M24 was calling to me to make a pendant.  Again, it was inspired by the artwork of Maxfield Parrish.  This is the result:

It began as an interlocking chain ring foundation and was expanded with subsequent rounds of tatting.  Accents are: size 11 Czech silver-lined seed beads in sky blue; an antique, carved, MOP shell button; and a 6mm sky blue Swarovski bicone bead.  This pendant will be placed on the vintage silver "gift tree" I keep just inside the hallway by my front door each Christmas.  Guests to my home are asked to take a piece with them when they leave after a holiday visit.

Well, dear readers, I have been busy sifting through my various thread, bead, button and fabric cabinets for items to use in the giveaway event.  In my opinion, this next one will be a "lou-lou"!  Look for the announcement along with all the details in tomorrow's post.

Jocelin and I have lots of household chores to take care of today, so we'd better get busy.  I'll finish rounding up goodies for the giveaway event this afternoon and take images shortly thereafter.  May you have a simply fantastic day doing whatever makes your soul sing!  Until tomorrow~
Happy Tatting!

New Ladies

Good afternoon, dear readers!  I had a wonderful package in the mailbox this morning.  It contained my winnings from the latest estate auction.  Here are my lovely new ladies:

The cameos are both set in 12K gold filled mountings.  The upper right one is accented with 10K rose and green gold flower and leaf motifs.  The earrings are set in sterling silver and are glass intaglio cameos.  They will be used as pendant accents.  I can hardly wait to put together a new Valdani Luxury Pearl Silk order! If I weren't anxiously awaiting a cultured pearl order, I'd call them up today.  BUT- I want to get the pearls in so I can decide exactly what I need threadwise.

Well, dear readers, what shall I call these ladies?  Please post your suggestions.  I will announce the names of these ladies and the others from the previous post after they are added to my Atelier website shoppe.

OH!  This is my 200th blog post!!!  I just realized it.  Be on the lookout later in the week for a giveaway event.  I'm cooking up something special!

Guess I had better get busy on the other Parrish inspired work-in-progress.  Have a great day & until tomorrow~
Happy Tatting!

Parrish Reveries Motif

Each year I select a theme for decorating our home during the holiday season.  This year I plan to draw inspiration from the artwork of my favorite artist- Maxfield Parrish.  His use of blue intrigues me.  From the trademark "Parrish Blue" to the more delicate tints and hues used in his work, I am enamored of his use of the color.

As I was flipping through my Parrish book, I decided to sift through the thread cabinets and see what I had that would work with a little idea percolating in the back if my mind.  The Valdani (size 8) pearl cotton color M24 "Water Reflections" immediately grabbed my attention.  It was the perfect colorway to suggest some of the more subtle blues in Parrish's work.  Then it was on to the bead boxes- I found some gorgeous Czech silver-lined sky blue seed beads that complimented the Valdani thread beautifully.  I decided a few 4mm crystal AB Swarovski bicones would be a nice touch, too, so I grabbed them.  This is the result:

The motif started off as a simple foundation:

Using a size 7 tatting needle, add 30 seed beads then tat as follows:
R 7 - 7 - (with 3 seed beads) 7 - 7 CL RW
CH 7 followed by 5 graduated picots 7 CL RW
R 7 + 14 - 7 CL RW
CH 14 CL R 9 - (with 3 seed beads) 9 CL CH 14 CL RW
R 7 + 7 - (with 3 seed beads) 7 - 7 CL RW
Continue around until you have 10 Rs & CHs.
Tie & cut, hide ends.

Add 15 seed beads to ball and tat as follows:
Join at - between R with beads and plain R
CH 8 - (with 3 beads) 8 CL +
CH 5 CL + between 1st and 2nd bead
then ta 4 1st 1/2 ds, 4 2nd 1/2 ds, 4 1st 1/2 ds CL + between 2nd and 3rd bead
CH 5 CL +
Continue around foundation until your piece resembles the image above, tie & cut, hide ends.

Accent round two is very simple and requires ten 4mm crystal AB Swarovski bicones.
Working on the other side of the Rs of the foundation, + between any 2 Rs and tat as follows around motif:
Pick up bicone with needle, CH 8 followed by 3 graduated picots 8 CL +
Note that when you pull the needle through, it will snug the bicone up nicely.  Watch your thread as you do not want it to twist on you.
After joining, pick up a bicone before continuing with your tatting.
Complete round, tie & cut, hide ends.

For the final round:
Join through the top bar of ds at the base of outer R/CH of foundation round,
CH 11 CL + to top bar of ds at base of beads on R
CH 9 CL + to top bar of ds on other side of beads on R
CH 11 CL + to top bar of ds at the base of R/CH
CH 11 CL + to top bar of ds immediately before picot set of next CH
CH 9 followed by 7 graduated picots 9 CL + to top bar of ds on the other side of picot set
Continue around motif, tie & cut, hide ends.

After completing the motif, I suggest blocking it and lightly spritzing it with Mary Ellen's Best Press.  This particular product does not leave a flaky residue like starch and sizing often do.  I hope you will enojoy the motif- I have already made a couple that will be gracing the Christmas tree in December.

There is another project I'm working on, but it is not quite ready for sharing.  And I am contemplating another giveaway.  What are you up for this time, dear readers?  I'm thinking about putting together a couple sets of fabric, thread, beads & such.  Does this appeal to you?  The Atelier still has LOTS of stuff that needs to find a new home!

Guess I'll get back to that other project I mentioned.  May you have a marvelous day!
Until tomorrow~
Happy Tatting!

WIP

I have been busy tatting away on a piece that will be shared with you next week.  The prototype is complete and I have identified the areas to tweak.  Now, I am busy tatting the piece in Valdani size 8 pearl cotton, color M24 "Water Reflections" and am using size 11 Czech seed beads (silver lined sky blue) for accents. I'll give you a peak at the very beginning of the design:

I took this image early this morning before completing the foundation motif.  Check out Monday's post for the finished piece and FREE pattern!

I feel the need to do another giveaway.  Who is up for another event?  I'll be announcing the details late next week, so comment on this post to let me know what kind of goodies you'd like this time- an original couture tatting piece, thread, buttons, beads, a mix of goodies- you name it and I'll see what I can come up with.

Don't forget to go by the International Spring Quilt Market if you're in the Kansas City area!  Valdani has some of my work featuring their wonderful threads on display.

Well, this piece isn't going to tat itself, so I'd better get back to it.  May you have a fantastic weekend doing whatever makes your soul sing!  Until next week~
Happy Tatting!

Junquing Treasure

After picking the kid up from school early today, we went junquing.  For those of you, dear readers, who do not know what it is, junquing is when you go to antique/junque (junk) shops and hunt for treasures.  We had a ball and I found a treasure for the Atelier!

Isn't this antique printer's tray perfect for organizing my buttons and antique brooches?  It is in excellent shape and was a bargain.  This tray is heavy and very well made.  It can withstand the abuse it will receive in my Atelier.

I found a few other little goodies that need to be cleaned and restored before I share them with you.  One may even be part of an upcoming giveaway event!

A selection of Valdani Luxury Pearl Silk- my favorite thread!

Dear readers, if any of you are in the Kansas City, Missouri, area this weekend, be sure to go to the International Spring Quilt Market and stop by Valdani's booth.  They are featuring some of my artwork at this show and will have a fabulous display of all of their sumputous threads.  Pick up a few balls of thread for yourself and enjoy all the eyecandy!

Well, I am off to clean the tray and perhaps I'll figure out where I'll put the thing.  Have a great day & until tomorrow~
Happy Tatting!

Necklace In Progress

Not much has gone on in the Piney Woods today.  I've just been tatting away on a couple of projects.
One of which is a necklace.  I'm currently tatting the foundation- here's an image of a portion of it:

The thread I'm using is Valdani Luxury Pearl Silk in color S 565 "Icy Leaves".  The accent beads are Ornela Czech size 11 seed beads in a matte olive.  After the foundation is complete, an additional round will be added along with a touch of overtatting.  I'll post an image of the finished piece when it's complete.

The other project I'm working on will be a surprise- well...sort of a surprise.  I'm working on another free pattern to share with you.  I will try to finish it this week, but it may not ready until next week.  Our daughter is almost done with the school year and we have MANY end-of-year activities.

The necklace is needing my attention so I had better get back to it.
Have a great day doing whatever makes your soul sing!
Until tomorrow~
Happy Tatting!

Pearl Brooch

The last of the auction items I won arrived today!  Here is an image of the beautiful cultured pearl circle brooch:

A couple of the pearls do not match as closely as they should, but that makes no difference to me.
It is mounted in a lovely vintage 12K rolled gold filled setting and is ready to be dressed up with some of my favorite Valdani Luxury Pearl Silk.

As you can see, it will be easy to add tatting to the brooch by joining in between the pearls.  Guess this will be another one of my weekend projects.

Well, I had been working on making more display boards, but there is a problem.  The belt on the table saw drive shredded and needs to be replaced.  I have to get Jim to change it out with a new belt before any new backing hardboard can be cut to finish out the displays.  I'll post images of them as soon as they are complete.  At least the foamcore boards are all covered and waiting to be secured in their frames.

I spent most of the morning working on a new pattern to share with you soon.  It should be done later in the week.  I'll get it up either this weekend or very early next week, so stay tuned for some new eye candy!

The cameos are calling me back to the Atelier, so until tomorrow~
Happy Tatting!

New Display

Good afternoon, dear readers!  I had a fantastic Mother's day weekend!!!
Jim and Jocelin treated me to a nice lunch on Sunday and a movie.  They also gave me a gorgeous hanging basket for the porch.  Yes, I was spoiled rotten.

Today I have been working on making a display board for the cameos that will be making their debut in the Romance of the Piney Woods couture tatting Autumn collection.  I was distracted by a mail delivery this morning, though.  Here is what arrived:

The 12K gold filled watch chatelaine pin I won at an auction!  It needed a good cleaning, so I took care of that.  Then I sketched out a couple of ideas for adding a tatted fob to it.  I'm really pleased with this little pin.

After I ate lunch and regained my focus, I finished the new display board:

I covered a foamcore board with some salvaged vintage crushed velvet in a delicate peach shade, taking care to hand miter the corners.  It was then secured in the frame and a hardboard backing was placed for extra support.  Later this afternoon I plan to add some hooks to the board to hang the cameos on.  So, what do you think?  Will my ladies look nice on their display board?  I think they will.

Speaking of my ladies, thank you so much for the name suggestions!  I am still considering names for these and some other new auction aquisitions.  If you come up with any others, please comment.

The homemade chili needs stirring and Jocelin has requested some of my special jello for dessert this evening (the recipe is: 2 packs of sugar free peach jello dissolved in 1 c. hot water with 1 12oz. can of cream soda added.  Let set.  Spoon serving into a bowl, add fresh peach slices and vanilla flavored cool whip topping).  I'd better get busy!
Have a great day & until tomorrow~
Happy Tatting!

Cameos!

As some of you may have noticed, I LOVE cameos and vintage jewelry.  Recently, I was the lucky bidder at a local estate auction of two beautiful vintage carved shell cameos.  Both are set in 12K rolled gold filled mountings- one a fancy filigree, one a simple scroll frame.  Giving these cameos a "tatting makeover" will be my weekend project.
But I do need help from you, dear readers.  I would like to come up with a lovely old-fashioned name for each cameo.
Here is the one mounted in the filigree setting:

What do you think her name should be?  Ophelia, Florance, Eugenia?  I am open to any suggestions you may have.

And here is the cameo in the scroll mounting:

Lydia, Agatha, Cornelia?  Do you know of a wonderful old name for this beauty?

As I am thinking of what to name my little beauties, I'll need to gather up the materials for their makeovers.  Of course, I will be using Valdani Luxury Pearl Silk thread, but I think they may also need a few pearls and Swarovskis, too.  My pearl stash is sure to contain a few options.  And I just picked-up a gross of the 3mm Swarovski crystal AB bicones at the bead store.  I may even have a vintage carnelian bead bracelet that could be raided for accent beads.  The angelskin coral beads I have are too pale for these cameos, so I guess I'll dig through the bead and vintage jewelry stashes in the Atelier.

After I get it all rounded up, I plan to set up my tatting environment and spend the weekend tatting to my heart's delight.  What will you be doing this Mother's Day weekend?  I know Jim & Jocie have something planned for me on Sunday, but as long as I get in some blissful tatting time today and Saturday everything will be wonderful.

May you all have a fantastic Mother's Day weekend (whether you're a mom or not) and don't forget to let me know your ideas on names for my ladies!
Until next week~
Happy Tatting!

Valdani Display

After much pinning and adjusting, I finally got the display board arranged to my liking.

I have had a VERY difficult time getting a good image of the entire thing!!!
Sorry for the glare and lack of quality of the image.  Oh, well... some days the outdoor light just will not cooperate.
Here is a detail image of a few pieces on the board:

The velveteen background catches everything.  I lint rolled this sucker countless times!  Still, it was a fun project and
I hope Dana at Valdani is pleased with the display and that they will have a great show next weekend in Kansas City with lots of thread sales.  I truly do love their threads!

It is time for a hot oil manicure after all of that pinning and tweaking.  I'm off to pamper my hands for a while.  Have a great day & until tomorrow~
Happy Tatting!

And the winner is:

tatterjil

Congratulations!!!
Please be so kind as to contact me and I'll get your goodies in the mail.

Many thanks to you all, dear readers!  I never thought I would enjoy blogging as much as I do.  You kind comments and encouragement help to keep me tatting and designing.  I am currently embarking on a few different tatting endeavors and will be sharing my adventures on the blog.

I've got to finish getting the pieces secured on the display board so it can be shipped first thing tomorrow morning.  Have a great day & until tomorrow~
Happy Tatting!

Special Project

Good afternoon!  I have been super busy in the Atelier working on a special project.  Valdani Thread Co. will be exhibiting at the International Quilt Show in Kansas City from May 17th through May 20th.  They have asked me to be a featured artist & to send a display of my tatting!  I am so excited!!!

Jim made a frame for me to put a velveteen covered foamcore board in to Valdani's specifications and this is how it looks:

It is 21"x21" square and will be filled with tatting.  I am still working on the placement of pieces and anchoring them down securely for shipment.

If any of you, dear readers, are in the Kansas City area, stop by the Valdani booth and buy yourself some of their fabulous thread.

DON'T FORGET THE MAY EVENT WINNER WILL BE ANNOUNCED TOMORROW MORNING!!!  IF YOU HAVEN'T DONE SO, PLEASE LEAVE A COMMENT ON LAST WEDNESDAY'S BLOG POST FOR YOUR CHANCE TO WIN.  GOOD LUCK!!!

Well, I am off to start supper.  Look at what we're having tonight:

Fresh snap beans!  Yummy!
After I get things going in the kitchen, I'll be working on that display board.  Have a wonderful day & until tomorrow~
Happy Tatting!

Just A Little Weekend Project

Good morning, dear readers!  I hope you all had as wonderful a weekend as I did.

While I am still working to finish up one project from the weekend, I think I'll share the quick and easy one today.  Remember the image from Friday of the little resin cameo earrings?  Here is what they look like now:

I dressed them up with a couple of rounds of accent chains and a few beige/silver Czech seed beads.  The thread used is Valdani Luxury Pearl Silk in S49 "Subtle Elegance".  It only took a few minutes to make the little cameos over into my style.  The next time you want a quick and fun tatting project, dig through your jewelry box and add a bit of tatting elegance to one of your  jewelry pieces.

REMEMBER: the May Event winner will be announced on Wednesday, May 9th!  Be sure to leave a comment on last Wednesday's post of the May Event for your chance to win the goodies.

I'm off to work on that other project left over from the weekend, so have a great day doing what you love- I will!
Until tomorrow~
Happy Tatting!

TGIF!

Thank goodness it's Friday!!!
I am so ready for the weekend!  It has been a very busy week here in the Piney Woods- designing, tatting, frogging & tatting some more. Not that my weekend will be much different, but I do like it when my sweeties are home and we have time together as a family.

I visited a new local quilt store today (blog feature to come in the near future) and purchased some fabric.  It is a delightful sage green with yellow roses.  I'm going to use it along with some daffodil yellow 3mm Swarovski bicones and freshwater pearls on a project this weekend.  Also, I dug out an old pair of earrings Jim gave me MANY years ago- some little resin cameos in a gold-filled setting.  I had added tatted accents to these, but wanted to give them a facelift with some of the fantastic Valdani Luxury Pearl Silk, so that is on my weekend "to do" list additionally.

What are you up to this weekend, dear readers?  I really do love to read your comments & find out what you're doing, too!

DON"T FORGET TO COMMENT ON WEDNESDAY'S POST FOR YOUR CHANCE TO WIN THE MAY GIVEAWAY EVENT!!!  THE WINNER WILL BE ANNOUNCED ON MAY 9TH- GOOD LUCK!

Well, I am going to get back to tatting and working on a special surprise for next week.  May you have an absolutely fantastic weekend doing whatever it is that makes your soul sing!
Until Monday~
Happy Tatting!

Fairy Queen Rose Blooms

Early this morning we had a nice little shower.  The garden and flowers in the yard have all perked-up and are showing off.  Especially our daughter's favorite rose bush.  It is a Jackson & Perkins variety called "Fairy Queen Rose".

The bush is short and low to the ground, covered in clusters of bright pink blooms.

I took these images while the blooms still had raindrops decorating their petals.  This variety does not have much fragrance, but produces gorgeous blooms.

Now to see if I have any thread close to this color to tat something with.  Regardless of whether I have a close color match, I believe I'll cut a few clusters for my little Waterford vase & admire them whilst tatting this afternoon.

Don't forget:  The Piney Woods May Event ends on Wednesday, May 9th!  Be sure to leave a comment on yesterday's post for your chance to win the lovely goodies.

Time for me to get back to tatting.  May you have a beautiful day filled with creativity!
Until tomorrow~
Happy Tatting!

May Event

I dug in the Atelier and put together this little grouping of goodies for our May Piney Woods Event:

Up for offer this time is a selection of charm squares, a skein of Thread Gatherer silk thread, a spool of Trebizond silk thread, a bag of Ornela cream pearl seed beads, and an assortment of buttons.  I dropped the little flower shaped one in the back yard and will put in a substitute if I can't find it.

To enter:
Leave a comment on this blog post telling how you'd use the goodies!
The winner will be selected via random number generator the morning of Wednesday, May 9th.
Good luck!

Now- I am off to hunt for that little flower button, water the garden, and tat a while.  Until tomorrow~
Happy Tatting!

Tuesday, May 1, 2012

Here is the bronze colored pendant I'm working on:

The thread I've used is Valdani pearl cotton in color P9.  Center accent is a Swarovski disc and Czech seed bead.  Outer accents are 3mm & 4mm champagne colored Swarovski bicones and matte brown Czech seed beads.  I plan to add another round or two to this pendant and will post images of the completed piece later this week.

This afternoon I plan to rummage through the Atelier for more goodies to include in the upcoming giveaway event.  I do believe that my button stash may need to be reducced.  The bead & fabric stashes were raided yesterday.  I've selected some really gorgeous items for this event!  Now... what shall I call it? Hmmm...

Guess I had better go and take some more Tylenol.  My raging sinus headache is returning with a vengeance!  Have a fabulous day & until tomorrow~
Happy Tatting!
