Great Start to the Holiday Weekend

Shabby Vintage
Good evening, dear readers!

I have had an absolutely wonderful day!  After a leisurely morning of project organizing in the Atelier, I met my handsome husband for a lunch date at our favorite local restaurant.  Then I spent the afternoon shopping with our daughter.  We especially enjoyed visiting with Brenda & Travis at the Chartreuse Pear.  They never fail to have oodles of wonderful goodies and inspirational eye candy!  My current favorite product they carry (aside from the fabulous Lollia hand crèmes) is "French Velvet" linen spray.  You can use it on your linens, but it deodorizes like a dream!  Even wet doggy odor!  I spray it in my Jeep after taking Rosie Fey to the park.

After picking up a few items at the grocery store and seeing to Rosie Fey, I finally picked up the tatting needles.  Here is the next step on the motif I'm experimenting with:

I'm pleased with its progress, so far.

Kelly commented on my previous blog post concerning the thread/bead experiment about using beads and variegated thread.  This can be tricky to do, design wise, but should not hinder one from trying.  Pay careful attention to the intervals of color changes within the thread.  Some machine dyed threads are very regimented in their variegation, which I personally find repugnant and totally useless for my purposes.  Valdani threads are all ARTISAN HAND DYED.  This makes all of the difference.  There are also some gorgeous HDT to be found on Etsy- check out LadyShuttleMaker and YarnPlayer!  They have beautiful threads.

Another factor to consider is what size beads you choose to use.  With the silk thread, I am using size 11/0 seed beads.  These are small, light weight and are in colors that compliment the thread.  A contrasting color combination would look nice, too.  My advise it to tat with threads and beads in colors that make YOU happy.

This is Memorial Day weekend here in the USA.  We take this time to remember all of those who have given their lives for our freedom.  Our family will celebrate by remembering the fallen heroes/heroines, cooking out and exercising our freedom by shooting on the target range and off-roading in the Jeep.  I hope to fit in some tatting time, too.  May you have a wonderfully creative weekend & until TUESDAY~
Happy Tatting!

Playing with Sulky Thread

Pearls & Lace
Good afternoon, dear readers!
We had a fantastic weekend celebrating Jim's birthday!  And Jocelin thinks she did well on the ACT exam.  Saturday & Sunday were full of fun family activities.  The weather co-operated and was just gorgeous.

I did manage to get the thread cabinets cleaned out and the culled thread now has new homes.  I will be mailing the thread to the recipients later this week- when I head into town.

One of the main threads I'm keeping is Sulky 12 wt. quilting cotton.  The Blendables shades are lovely variegateds that tat up well.  The solids have a nice sheen and tat up equally as well.  Here is a small chocolate colored Sulky motif I tatted this morning:

This little motif will be expanded and a tiny button pearl center accent added.  So, what do you think?  Have any of you out there found any other neat threads you'd recommend?  I love to try new threads, but tend to go back to my favorites- Valdani Luxury Pearl Silks, Valdani Pearl Cottons & Sulky 12 wt.  Caron Wildflowers is nice, too, along with the Dinky Dyes pearl cottons.

Well, I am off to the Atelier to play with the Sulky 12 wt. thread until Jim comes home from work.  Have a great day & until tomorrow~
Happy Tatting!

Garden & Porch Flowers

Pearls & Lace
Good afternoon, dear readers!
We had a very pleasurable, yet busy weekend.  Jim finally got the garden fully prepped for planting- which we will begin late this afternoon.  The delay in our prepping was due to the large amount of poison ivy that had grown down the back of the fence.  Jim is highly allergic, but I seem to be able to roll in it with no adverse effects.  Now, our 30' X 30' garden is ready for planting!

Jim gave me a few new pretty flowers for the front porch:

The petunias and dianthus are in cute hanging baskets, and the blue plumbago is going to the right of the steps.  The other image is of the dogwood outside our bedroom window.  It is in full bloom.

Here is an image of our little garden, well, most of it.  This was the best shot I had thanks to the glare.  Notice the recycled swingset frame in the back.  Jim puts a mesh on each side of it and it is perfect for our pole beans.  He is also building tomato towers and a trellis or two for gourds and cucumbers.  I hope we have a good growing season!

The other thing that had me busy this weekend was going through my MANY thread cabinets.  I am culling the thread and let me tell you- it's a job!  If I do not plan to use it, I'm giving it to my tatting buds.  I really need the room for a future Valdani order as I'm coming out with 3 more original design lines!  After I cull the thread, I plan to move onto the - GASP- button jars and bead boxes.  Yep, it's going to be a fun couple of weeks, so please be so kind as to bear with the crazy tatting lady!

Well, Rosie Fey is begging for her afternoon romp.  Have a wonderful day & until tomorrow~
Happy Tatting!

Celtic Faire

Celtic Faire
Good morning, dear readers!
The blog theme for March is Celtic Faire.  I have several new interlocking chain ring motifs to share.  Each week will feature an ICR foundation with different options to flesh it out.  We will begin on Monday with an ICR motif of 3, the next week 4 and so on.  The Valdani threads I have put aside for this month are fabulous!

Rosie is slowly adjusting to being an Atelier dog.  She wants to chew everything!  I've gotten her some puppy teething chews, but she prefers my boots and socks.  Let's hope she learns to settle down on her dog bed and not chew my feet while I tat.  That is very distracting- puppy teeth are very sharp!  Jim says she just wants my attention regardless of how much tatting I need to do.

Well, I am off to dig in the Atelier closet and see what items I can find that are St. Pat's or Celtic themed.  There should be some nice sterling silver shamrock charms in there along with some triskelions.  Have a nice weekend and be sure to check out the FREE pattern on Monday's blogpost.  Until then~
Happy Tatting!

Embroidery Prep

Winter Blossoms
Good afternoon, dear readers!
I am busy today ironing the Osnaburg, muslin and rough weave fabric I plan to use on embroidery projects.  After I finish with the ironing, I'll be cutting the fabric into appropriate sizes.  Then it's time to begin transferring the designs I've sketched onto the fabric.  As soon as I get in my Valdani order, I'll begin embroidering and tatting on them.  I ordered lots of Valdani embroidery floss and stranded silk floss.  It can't get here quick enough for me!

We have some nasty weather headed our way so I really want to get these embroidery projects organized and into plastic bags so I can settle into my comfy tatting chair with the next tatting venture this evening.  Hope you all have a great day & until tomorrow~
Happy Tatting!

A Day of Frustration

Winter Blossoms
Good afternoon, dear readers!
I will try to get this post done quickly as today has been very frustrating.  Earlier, the power went out and I lost the images I was editing on the computer.  Power remained off for several hours, then after it came back on, my internet service provider was down.  I tried to tat on my front porch for a while, but it was too damp and cold- my fingers ached after only a few minutes.  So... I made myself a mug of hot cocoa, went to the Atelier and sorted through my MOP buttons.  I pulled several for future designs and have spent the remainder of my time doing thread inventory.  Guess I'll be doing another Valdani order this week.

Well, I had better get back to designing the FREE pattern and get this posted before the internet goes down again.  Hope your day is going better than mine.  Until tomorrow~
Happy Tatting!

Pendant Prototype Giveaway

Okay, I'm finally back from running errands and have finished the pendant for the giveaway.  Here it is:

Hope y'all like it!  And many thanks for letting me know what you'd like to see for the holidays.  I'll plan some FREE patterns for your enjoyment so visit the blog often for future Christmas themed features.

DON'T FORGET TO LEAVE A COMMENT ON THIS POST ABOUT WHAT YOU'D LIKE TO SEE DURING THE HOLIDAYS TO BE ELIGIBLE TO WIN THE PENDANT!!!
********************************************************************************************************
Good morning, dear readers!

Well, I worked on a new pendant design yesterday, but it did not go as planned.  The general idea will require more count adjusting and tweaking on my part, but I am going to do a special weekend giveaway event for the prototype!

The shape is not quite what I wanted, but I will be adding a couple of additional interlaced chains to the outer round.
This pendant is tatted with Valdani pearl cotton in M30 "Deep Waters" and Valdani Luxury Pearl Silk in "Forest Greens".  It is accented with turquoise Czech seed beads, olivine Swarovski bicones and has a center enhancement of an antique abalone button with a dyed freshwater pearl.  I'll add an image to this post later in the day after I add the outer finishing chains.

Okay, to enter the giveaway:  simply leave a comment on this blogpost and let me know what you'd like to see for the holidays.
The winner will be selected by a random number generator and will be announced first thing Monday, November 12th, 2012.  Good luck!!!

Lily Fey is staring holes in me and I am ready for some hot cocoa to jump start my day.  Have a great weekend and check back later today as I will have a better image of the finished pendant up.  Until Monday~
Happy Tatting!

Autumn in the Piney Woods

Good morning, dear readers!

Hope y'all had a wonderful weekend- ours was great.
This is my favorite time of year.  The temperatures are cooler and my Piney Woods are ablaze in glorious color.  Jim and I took a number of walks in the woods and enjoyed the scenery.

As you can see from the image above, there was much in the way of artistic inspiration.  Such lovely colors and textures to spark new tatting ideas!

After I composed the image collage, I went to the Valdani site and perused their wonderful pearl cottons.  So many are perfect for this time of year.  They perfectly reflect the colors in my Piney Woods that I love to use for my one of a kind tatted art.  Here is my suggestion for those of you who have asked for artistic advise:  Go out and look at the colors around you.  Take some images with your digital camera or phone, then go to the Valdani website and see what thread colors strike your fancy.  Let me know what colors particularly appeal to you!  I really want to know!!!

Jim is off today & tomorrow so we will be doing various family activities.  I do plan to get in a fair bit of tatting later, but right now Lily Fey is giving me one of her "looks" and Jim is sitting at the dining table very expectantly.  Guess I'd better get Mr. Grumpy Britches his coffee and take Lily Fey on her run.  Have a great day & until tomorrow~
Happy Tatting!

Almost Normal

Good morning!

I awoke feeling almost normal!  Other than sneezing a bit, I'm much better.  And I got some tatting done yesterday!!!  See...

There is what I call a foundation round under the interlaced chains that attaches to the Rs previously tatted. I had added layered chains around the perimeter, but was not pleased with the look.  After ripping that out, I decided that I should take an image to show you at least a bit of work.  I'm contemplating what to do next.  This piece is for a dear friend and I want it to be special, just for her.

The Fairy Queen pendant will be finished this weekend & featured in a special blogpost Sunday.

Jim is taking today off for us to have a date day, so I do not imagine I'll get much tatting done.  I have no idea where we're going or what we're doing.  He said it was a "surprise".  Hmmm... I wonder.

Well, the kid is still snoring and will be late for school if I don't get her up soon.  Have a great weekend and don't forget to check out the blog Sunday afternoon.  Until then~
Happy Tatting!

Ready for Fall

Good morning!

I had a lovely day in the Atelier and front porch yesterday!  I figured out the basic counts for the foundation of a new mystery piece and started it.  Here is a little peek at the very beginning:

This will be tatted to about 20", then more layers of tatting will be added.  I have a way to go!  So, what do you think it will be???

The evening brought a very pleasant surprise.  My darlin' Jim brought me a couple of gorgeous bronze mum plants!  I love mums!!!  Especially bronze and white!  Mums always make me long for Fall.  I'm ready for the cool, crisp Autumn days.

After I potted these beauties, I spent some time straightening up the porch and watering all of the plants.  I do believe I'll roll the Valdani thread cart out to the porch and sift through the colors to tat something inspired by my bronze mums this weekend!

Be sure to leave a comment on the Blogversary Celebration Giveaway post for your chance to win one of the three prizes!  Winners will be announced on August 29th, 2012.  Good luck!

Well, I am off to the Atelier for a couple of hours before I have to run errands.  Have a great day and a fantastic weekend.  Until next week~
Happy Tatting!

Blogversary Giveaway Detail Images

I know the images of the prizes were not the best, but I just wanted to get the event up and going as promised on Saturday!  Sunday afternoon was nice & overcast here, so I took more images of the loot for your enjoyment.  Here are the detail shots for each prize:

Nautical Dream-

This little notebook is so cute!  I love the pink shades on the shells.  The Valdani pearl cotton reminds me of an exotic sea.

I tried to get a good shot of the button, but it was being difficult!  It is a lovely light turquoisy (I know that's not a word, but...) color with pink/lavender flashes.  The Tokyo Milk soap smells wonderful!

Thread close-up.

Lovely vintage buttons.  I adore the pink shells!

"Calm" Lollia luxury handcreme- what could be more perfect for this package?!?

Garden Delight-

I love to work with purples, pinks & greens.  These colors are what I gravitate toward in my Spring flowerbeds.  The Valdani pearl cotton picks up the shades nicely.

A little Tokyo Milk soap & Czech art glass button.  This is glass, but it almost looks like it is inlaid with shell.

Thread detail.

A variety of vintage pink buttons.

"Imagine" Lollia luxury handcreme- I hope it sparks your imagination!

Autumn Longing-

Paris is so romantic.  So is the Valdani pearl cotton.  "Robin's Nest" is a color I've used for years.  I never tire of it's beauty.

This Czech art glass button is very flashy!  The little Tokyo Milk soap is enchanting.

Thread worthy of any Paris catwalk!

Red, light golden yellow & peachy vintage buttons.

"Classic Petal" Lollia luxury handcreme- ooh-la-la!

I hope you now have a better view of the prizes up for grabs!  I tried to put each prize package together so that there would be something for everyone in this event.

Everyone can use a little notebook to tuck in their tatting bag or purse.  I've included several of my favorite threads for you to try, along with Czech art glass buttons and vintage buttons.  The little Tokyo Milk soaps are small and just right for traveling.  But the extra special goody is the Lollia luxury handcreme.  This is my favorite handcreme!  I use it several times daily.  It absorbs quickly and does not leave a residue on my hands.  In my opinion, it is the perfect loition for tatters!

To enter the event, please leave a comment on Saturday's blogpost saying which prize you prefer and why.  I am keeping a running list of who prefers each prize.  The winner of each prize package will be selected via random number generator on Wednesday, August 29th, 2012, and subsequently announced on the blog that morning.

Good luck!!!

Well, I'm off to the Atelier.  I didn't get much accomplished in the way of tatting this weekend, but hope to have something pretty to share with you tomorrow.  Have a wonderful day & until then~
Happy Tatting!

FREE ICR FR Motif Pattern

As requested, here is the pattern to my ICR FR (interlocking chain-ring with floating ring) motif:

This motif is of 5 interlocking chain rings with a floating ring thrown off each ICR.  You will need 2 size 7 needles. The thread I'm using is Valdani size 8 pearl cotton in M21 "Treasures".   The counts for each ICR are as follows:
R 15 (FR 9 sm- med- sm- 9 cl) 15 CL

To begin the motif, cut a long length of thread with a needle at each end.  R 15 on needle one, then place needle two at the base of the ds on needle one and tat the counts for the floating ring.  Your work should look like this:

Now, run needle two through the stitches, snugging up the floating ring neatly.  Use your fingers to smooth it if necessary, finish tatting the remaining 15 ds on needle one.

Close the ICR and move on to the next.  Your work will look like this:

Again, the first 15 ds are on needle one; 9 sm- med- sm- 9 on needle two.  Close the floating ring as before, shaping it as you go.  Place the remaining 15 ds on needle one.

Close the ICR.

This is what your work will look like at this point.  Continue tatting the last three ICRs & voila.

I am planning to expand this motif into a pendant/brooch and will probably post it in a week or so.
Hope you enjoy this motif!

Well, I am off to run some errands before the weekend.  May you have a marvelous weekend full of tatting fun.  I will be playing in the woods in my Jeep for a bit, then I plan to tat away on some new motifs.  Until next week~
Happy Tatting!

Playing Around

Yesterday I played around with the Swarovski pearl & crystal pin I'd beaded.  This is how it looks now:

The tatting is done in size 12 Valdani pearl cotton (color "Primitive White").  I will be adding more rounds to it today and playing with the little do-ma-hickey I beaded pictured below:

This will probably be a pendant foundation but I may do a bracelet out of several motifs if it turns out like what I picture in my head.

I had intended to post images of a fig pound cake, but haven't had time to bake one.  I'll be posting the recipe next week along with more tatting goodies.  Keep your eyes open for something really cool next Friday!

It's early, but I've got a full day ahead- tatting and lots of errands.  May you have a wonderful weekend doing whatever it is that makes your soul sing.  Until next week~
Happy Tatting!

Louisiana Summer Pendant

As today is the Summer solstice, I thought it would be appropriate to debut a particular piece in the upcoming Romance of the Piney Woods couture tatting collection.

This is "Louisiana Summer", an Eternity pendant tatted with size 12 Valdani pearl cotton in color M80 (Distant Grass) and enhanced with White Lotus pearls, Swarovski crystals and Czech seed beads.  It will be available for purchase on the website in July!

A set of patterns for this piece and several other Eternity pendants will be available in August.  I love working in the round!  Some folks may find it boring, but I love to add layered tatting, beads and vintage accents.  Something simple can become so much more with just a little effort and imagination.

So, what do you think, dear readers?  Would you like to see a few other sneak peeks soon?  I have a number of these Eternity pendants made up and am considering offering one of the patterns as a freebie on the blog.

Well, I had better get back to work in the Atelier.  There are several larger works-in-progress on the tatting table that require my attention. Have a great day & until tomorrow~
Happy Tatting!

New Valdani Threads!

I received the Valdani order & have been drooling over my new threads!
After pawing them and pairing them with beads and vintage accents, I decided it was time to reload the slim satchel.

Most of the threads are new (for me, anyway) Valdani colors.  Some I've had for a bit.  The "Primitive White" and "Distant Grass" pearl cotton colors are wonderful!  Plus, the silks are gorgeous!!!

If you do not have a "Slim Satchel" by Artbin, I highly recommend you check them out.  Mine has been schlepped all over the place!  It fits perfectly in my Jeep Wrangler and in the canvas bag I use for park outings.  Oftentimes, I load it with all the essentials, but for moment, it will hold and protect my working assortment of threads.

Tomorrow is the estate auction and I hope to find some nice treasures.  Wish me luck!  I'm off to tat some more Eternity Pendants and to finish dressing a cameo.  Have a great day & until tomorrow~
Happy Tatting!

Romance Sneak Peek

As many of you know, I am working on a body of original, one-of-a-kind couture tatted art called Romance of the Piney Woods.  Here is a little peek at one of the pieces:

This work is my original COPYRIGHTED work.  It may not be reporduced in any manner!!!

This is the June Romance brooch.  It's base is a vintage 12K rolled gold filled filigree pin that is enhanced with teal freshwater pearls, grey AB Swarovski bicones and tatting (in fabulous size 8 Valdani pearl cotton in color M30).  This piece will be available for purchase on my Piney Woods Atelier website in late July when the entire collection will be posted.

A pattern collection based upon my original artwork will be available in August.

Well, I guess I had better get back to work.  There's a heap of stuff awaiting me in the Atelier!  May you have a great day & until tomorrow~
Happy Tatting!

Change of Plans

Well, after I got out the pearls, I decided to not to use the silver peacock ones.  They are pretty, but did not seem to be right for the little filigree brooch.  I experimented with green, brown, peach and teal pearls.  The teal pearls looked best to my eye.  This is how the brooch looks now:

Sorry the image isn't the best, but it was VERY early this morning when I took it.  The pearls have 3mm grey AB Swarovski bicones between them.  I will be using Valdani size 8 pearl cotton in M30 for the accent tatting.

This afternoon, I plan to do some test tatting for a friend.  If she gives the okay, I'll post the results of that later.

It's not even 8 a.m. yet, but this has already been one busy morning!  And now I'm off to pick more blueberries before it gets too hot.  Have a great day and remember:

TODAY IS THE LAST DAY BEFORE THE WINNER OF THE SUMMER VACATION EVENT IS ANNOUNCED!!!  BE SURE TO LEAVE A COMMENT ON THAT BLOGPOST FOR YOUR CHANCE TO WIN- GOOD LUCK!

Until tomorrow~
Happy Tatting!

Yard Treasures

Today has been busy and I haven't even harvested all the ripe fruits and veggies in the yard & garden yet!  My yard is full of treasures.
Since I don't have much new in the way of tatting to show you, I'll just put up an image collage of what I'll be tending to later this after noon:

The blueberries are ripening, the lavender is blooming again, and the fig tree is in need of watering as it is loaded with little figs.  Jim had fresh blueberries in his muffins this morning, but there are still lots that need picking.  I should get off my duff and pluck some lavender blooms for sachets for my thread cabinets, too.

Many of you have asked, "where so you find all of those cameos, brooches and pins?"  As you know, I adore antique stores and estate sales.  That is where I find most of the treasures.  I am fortunate to have a number of great friends who own antique stores or conduct auctions.  They oftentimes give me a heads up when an antique cameo lot or pin lot is up for grabs.  Believe me, I take full advantage!  Guess where I was at this morning?  You guessed it- an estate sale.  I have a few more little goodies to enhance with tatting next week.

This afternoon I placed a new Valdani order and hope to have some fabulous new threads to share with you late next week or early the week after that.  I have some gorgeous Luxury Pearl Silks and Pearl Cottons on the way!

DON'T FORGET TO LEAVE A COMMENT ON THE SUMMER VACATION GIVEAWAY POST FOR YOU CHANCE TO WIN SOME GREAT GOODIES!  THE WINNER WILL BE ANNOUNCED ON THE BLOG ON JUNE 7TH!  GOOD LUCK!

The sweet tea in the fridge is calling to me.  Think I'll pour a glass and tat a bit before Jim gets home.  Have a great weekend doing whatever makes your soul sing!  Until next week~
Happy Tatting!

Parrish Pendant

The remainder of the ball of Valdani size 8 pearl cotton in M24 was calling to me to make a pendant.  Again, it was inspired by the artwork of Maxfield Parrish.  This is the result:

It began as an interlocking chain ring foundation and was expanded with subsequent rounds of tatting.  Accents are: size 11 Czech silver-lined seed beads in sky blue; an antique, carved, MOP shell button; and a 6mm sky blue Swarovski bicone bead.  This pendant will be placed on the vintage silver "gift tree" I keep just inside the hallway by my front door each Christmas.  Guests to my home are asked to take a piece with them when they leave after a holiday visit.

Well, dear readers, I have been busy sifting through my various thread, bead, button and fabric cabinets for items to use in the giveaway event.  In my opinion, this next one will be a "lou-lou"!  Look for the announcement along with all the details in tomorrow's post.

Jocelin and I have lots of household chores to take care of today, so we'd better get busy.  I'll finish rounding up goodies for the giveaway event this afternoon and take images shortly thereafter.  May you have a simply fantastic day doing whatever makes your soul sing!  Until tomorrow~
Happy Tatting!
